Kenton grew up on a family farm between Orleans and Oxford, Nebraska. The experiences on the family farm taught him about hard work and cultivated
his love of working with plants. In 2002, he graduated from Southern Valley High School.
Kenton attended the University of Nebraska - Lincoln where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Horticulture in 2007 and
Master of Science degree in Horticulture in 2009. During his M.S. studies, he studied vegetative establishment of buffalograss.
He continued his academic career at Kansas State University and received a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Horticulture in 2013.
While working on his Ph.D., he conducted research on the shade tolerance of zoysiagrass and evapotranspiration measurements in turfgrass.
Kenton's wife, Erin (Powell), grew up in Beaver City and also graduated from Southern Valley High School in 2002. Erin graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University with a B.S. in Accounting in 2006. In 2011, she received her M.B.A from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. They have three children, Korver, Kolbie and Kyler.
